art therapy

Some things are difficult or impossible to put into words, art therapy can help you express and explore non-verbally. No artistic experience or skill is required to do art therapy.  There are many ways to use art therapy and it can be adapted to meet the needs of the individual.

It is common to feel uncertain about creating art in therapy--in many ways our society does not support adults to create--we may have been judged in the past for our creations and have come to believe art is not meant for us. The truth is that art is for everyone, and I believe every person deserves to feel safe and free to express themselves, whether it be through visual art, writing, music, dance, etc.

Art therapy is done in a safe and judgment-free space, where attention is given to the experience of art-making as well as exploring what has been created. Having a safe and accepting space to create art can help to loosen the hold of critical or perfectionist parts of the self.  Art therapy can assist you to express feelings, process emotions, and can support transformation. You may discover new aspects of your self,  and express yourself in new and empowering ways.  Initiating a dialogue with the unconscious (unknown) aspects of the self can bring greater understanding and ultimately lead to greater authenticity and wholeness.

These are just a few of the many ways art therapy can support healing. Please reach out to find out more or schedule a 15 minute consultation.
