Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that uses bilateral stimulation -- which can include bilateral eye movements, sounds, and/or tapping --to support the healing of trauma. It involves less talking than traditional therapy and can feel empowering to clients.
In any type of counseling approach, it is important that you feel safe with your therapist, and have developed resources and coping tools before processing trauma. EMDR therapy includes building rapport and trust with your therapist, and developing tools for managing strong emotions that could surface during or between sessions.
EMDR has 8 phases of treatment, more information is provided on the EMDRIA website: https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/experiencing-emdr-therapy/
